Ok I just got my 2 sugar gliders, male and female, and I have had them for almost a week, well the female bites me when I try to hold her but the male doesnt, he just licks my fingers, I try feeding her with my hand and she wont have it, she just goes the other way. She wont take treats or anything from me, I NEVER see her eating, but she may when im not looking.. when I try to hold her she will not stay in my hand, she runs up my arm and to my back to try and jump somewhere else to get away. Could this be because she may be pregnant? The male and female have been together for a year or so from what the other owners told me, she is 2 and he is 3, also when I walk by the cage they scatter and its like it scares them so bad, even if I walk by slowly somtimes. The male also wont really let u hold him, he will try and hide or run up ur arm, there is NO way I could put either one on the ground or bed to let them play because I have already lost the female once and about lost her again the day I got her. If anybody can help me out please let me know.
I have a large genji tent I got online. I take a book in and ignore them until they start coming to me then I play with featherteasers, fingerpuppets, bubbles, jingle balls........lots of things ..............have to keep alternating the items as they get bored easily. I do not just let my gliders bite me. I do get bit and am not afraid to take a bite but I make the pfffffffffffftttttt or psssssssst sound loudly and they eventually quit. I think when they are young they just go through a biting phase. Now when the males dance with their back legs and start biting that is squaggle dancing and thats not fun ..........i usually end tent time if I cant get them to quit with toys and stuff. Good Luck!
Just remember no cat toys with catnip............its toxic to gliders.
With time and patience they will bond it just takes time, each glider is different. I have had some bond in a few weeks, some a few years...............And everything in between!! I also carry them in a zippered bonding pouch. they are scent oriented if you could get some fleece squares and wear them a few days and put a peice in the pouch everyday it will help them get used to your smell. glidercentral.net has tons of bonding info!! Good Luck!
