I just got 2 sugar gliders and this is my first time having any. i love them to death they are so sweet, but i cant get rid of the smell they put off and its really bad. what can i use to get rid of the smell. i tried baking soda but its not working. plz help me!!
well what kind of cage is it. all wire or is it made of wood. what kind of toys are on the inside. what kind of bedding do you use? all of there play a factor in the smell.
I once had a cage given to me with a suger glider and it smelled really bad. the problem was was that the guy made the cage himself using a wood frame and didn't seal the wood up so the wood soaked in all the urine and kept the smell and it builded up and got worse as time went by, so i bought a all wired pvc coated cage and it works great. I dont suggest using a bird cage because the urine will run down into the tray that holds the tray that comes out and builds up and smells really bad. get a cage that is all wire that goes to the ground and has room for a slide in tray like this. http://www.cageworks.com/cage_gallery/s ... index.html pluse u need to wash any and all toys in the cage at least ounce a week to help with the smell. I also use a bedding that has chlyophill or something like that to help with the smell. Go to wal-mart and get one of those puffers the put out a good smell.
they are in a wire cage with pvc pipe around it. what do i need to clean the cage with? i was told just water only. they have one wood toy in there they hardly play on at all, its a latter. the cage does sit on the ground but it also sits on the tray, it dont pull out or anything and i just use paper to grab their droppings. but right now it dont smell as bad as they did when i first brung them home. but there is still a lil smell. thanks for your help
I use soap and hot water and i scrub it all over. and make sure u wash the wooden ladder often because even though they may not play on it it doesnt mean that they dont get there urine on it.
I use a bit of bleach when cleaning the cage and toys. Just be sure to rinse them all well. Also..don't clean everything at once! Do the toys one day..cage another and their pouches and blankies another. If you do it this way they won't go on a marking spree when all is nice and fresh at once. I have two ..Rex and Cricket and have very little smell from them.
i cleaned just their toys last night with soap and water and we i woke up this morning, the smell was REALLY bad. i dont know what to do. it just cant keep the smell down
There's something called elimna on suncoast or they also have the elimna spray called PureAyre..kind of a vinegary smell I'm told. I don't like the idea of chemicals around my babes though. And..if you have male suggies maybe neutering would help.
Try changing less stuff at one go, clean just a few things like a wheel
and some toys. Also, what might help the marking is using some
material that they use, and rubbing it on the item you cleaned, then it
wont need to be marked on. Also, neuteuring does reduce
smell.
I have a male that is not intact... and he doesn't smell bad at all. Lastnight, I just got me a 10 month old pair... boy and girl. they are extremely tame and friendly... BUT....
they smell HORRIBLE! and that is why the guy I got them from got rid of them. I mean these things are down right RANK!
I do think I have figured out a large part of the problem though....
They have a rather large exercise wheel, and it is pretty well enclosed other then a few holes around it for them to jump in. Lastnight, I seen my new baby boy SOAKED... and I couldn't figure out why. then I watched him get in that wheel and start running. when he did.... piss just started flying everywhere. they are peeing in the wheel and then flinging it all over themselves! they love that wheel... I hate to take it away from them, but I am afraid I am going to have too. I think that may be the biggest part of why they are smelling so bad. if it is... the wheel!eel just has to go!
