My sugar glider doesnt seem to be scared of me anymore and its been 6 days since ive had him but he BITES! hard too. Is this something that well eventually fade away once we bond better or should i work on this with him buy special training or taming or something
Considering that you have had him for just under a week, I would say that he is scared and stressed from being taken out of his enviroment to a new one. Give him time and I'm sure he will come around. Gliders need to feel safe and secure in their enviroments and seeing how we are HUGE in their eyes the only defense they think they have is to bite. So talk softly, spend lots of time with your new baby in a bonding pouch, do some bonding in a smaller space for more one on one,sit by his cage and read, talk or sing to him and in time and patience he will come around. But with gliders you need to go at their pace, not yours.

give him treats when he doesnt bite you, and when he does bite, gently blow in his face or rear. Gliders cant distinguish where it comes from, but it startles them. eventually, he'll learn that if he bites humans, he gets scared.

Lol, I was just about to post a question about this. My baby constantly bites, but its not out of fear. Shell crawl all over me then stop on my hand or arm and bite. And when my papaw holds her, she crawls up on his shoulder and bites his neck or ear, and shell bite anywhere on your hand. I think she thinks its funny lol.Glider_082008-08-25 21:26:06
I've had two gliders that have done this. They were both friendly and would glide right over to me run around for a while then decide that they wanted to eat a piece of my arm. I tried all kinds of things to get them to stop and the one that finally worked was hissing at them when they bit. In both cases I had to hiss at them twice and have never been bitten since.
Mine was doing that too, well Micki was. What I did was blow in his face. It took about 4 times of blowing in his face when he realized"hey no biting no blowing." This does work my Micki was a biter and he bit to draw blood. He is better now just be patient and he will come around.

My little girl Shiloh bites but its almost as though she thinks its funny. She will bite play all over me then take a chunk out of me. I try to just say no and not react too much because I didnt want to worsen the situation but wow does it wake you up!I will try anything. Ive only had Shiloh for 2 months but my other suggie ,Sugz,Ive had almost a year and she had never nipped. Any advice on bonding is appreciated. I have wondered if would be a good idea to seperate Shiloh and take her with me alone some( i always carry them both) since Ive had time to bond with Sugz one on one she acted more bonded much sooner but I only had her by herself. I read that some gliders bite as a way to taste things. I am no expert, but my young female constantly bites my ears, and when she does, I gently mover her head away from my ear, and after doing this 3 or 4 times, she gets bored and goes onto something else.
