Too high in sugar?

I have been thinking about diets again...oh God NO!...and after visiting the SUGAR group site and looking at the results. I am very concerned about the amount of sugars in our diets. in the wild gliders do eat some sources of sugars: sap...and some nectar. both are very diluted forms though. Honey is concentrated nectar...very concentrated. and is a source of fructose. Sap, tree sap, closest equivalent would be NATURAL maple syrup. while a different species, basically the same, but again VERY concentrated and a source of sucrose. our captive gliders also have a lessened need to exercise, and I am sure do not use up as many calories as our wild counterparts.
more sugars...less activity...I am very concerned about these things...

I have had the same concerns about the honey levels in many of the diets being used. HPW is mostly honey and water. Just does not sit well with me at all.

I feed Reep's diet. There is no honey in it at all.

Chicken baby food, rice baby cereal (or mixed baby cereal) Wambaroo high protein suppliment and apple juice.

In the past year, I have also been alternating using scrambled eggs for the chicken baby food about every 3rd batch (one batch is only for one night for my crew!)

They get this along with fresh fruits and frozen mixed vegies. Fruits depend on what's in season.

I also feed yogurt 2-3 times per week. And a couple days a month I go "off" the diet and offer different foods. Always healthy, but different from the norm. They might get scrambled eggs or chicken and totally different vegies than what they normally get.

Been feeding this for about 6 1/2 years now and have had the best results. Healthy gliders all at good weights. Very healthy joeys with healthy oop weights and good growth rates.

Cora,

I can get to your site, but when I try to navigate to the other pages I get a DNS look up error.

I have called 3 diff people and they could all access and navigate my site without difficulty. I will just copy and paste the diet
I encourage you to do you to do your own research on the many diets being fed, talk with your vet

and decide the diet that is right for your gliders and your lifestyle and of course the ingredients that are available to you!

I feed a protein source every night such as boiled chicked, boiled Turkey, or scrambled eggs(never pork), a calcium source every night (on egg night its in the eggs), strawberry whips yogurt, mine like other yogurt flavors also like cherry and berry, yoplait brand not "light". I also feed high calcium vanilla ensure 3-4 times per week. I make a veggie relish out of the frozen green beans, corn, and carrot mixture and add about 3/4 cup more corn to it as well as about a quarter cup collard greens, Water , and a couple tablespoons of apple juice..............I feed this relish every night as well as sugar snap peas for the second veggie I alternate baby food squash , sweet bell pepper , baked sweet potatoes or baby food sweet potatoes, I laso give watermelon every night and alternate papaya, mango, avacodo, cantelope, honeydew melons. I sometimes top with shaved almonds, sesame or pumpkin seeds, raisons. I feed a cricket or 2 (safely bought from someone who does not use corn for bedding as that is a cause for concern regarding aflatoxin poisoning) , and mealworms daily. I feed pine nuts as a treat, This is just how I feed. Diet is very controversial in the glider community! I have fed BML for 2 years and HPW for 3 years. After research and such this is what I am going to do. I suggest everyone research their own diets. Unfortunately it is difficult to get enough blood for the type of bloodwork it would take to "prove" the diets once and for all. I feed more stuff than I mentioned but its hard to remember everything.....LOL

Reeps diet. I have never tried it. have read about it. I may just try to alter "my" diet a tiny bit. I may just cut back on the honey in it to try and cut back on the sugars. Gonna look at the Reeps again also. Thanks for the input everyone!

Cora,

I was just interested in seeing your diet. I currently feed the Blended Diet and my gliders are cleaning up their little plates so I am very happy with that.

I Don't understand why I couldn't open your link, unless it was because I am using FireFox.
