Hello! I recently recieved a 1 1/2 year old sugar glider. I've been feeding her the commercial pellets, as well as 1 tablespoon of each fruits and vegetables (altho she doesnt eat all the veggies sometimes). I try to give her papaya every night because i know it has calcium in it. she also really enjoys cherries. I alternate giving her plain yogurt and applesauce one night, followed by scrambled egg with some veggies in it the next night.

Is this okay?

This same question comes up over and over.  Please check out this thread that answers pretty much the same question.  Pay particular attention to the comments about the pelleted food and the links to other boards.

I read that already. I don't care about people's OPINIONS on the diet, I'm going to keep feeding her the pellets whether or not the old school sugar glider owners think its okay or not. I'm interested if anyone has tried, and if they've seen any complications first hand; not just read about the precautions.

I read a post somewhere about somebody who fed their Glider a particular brand of pellets and their Glider passed away very young with no other known causes of death. Whether the pellets did it, I couldn't tell you. Whether, the story is true. I don't know that either. I can tell you that they DO cause problems. My friend has the most OBESE Glider I have EVER seen. It has been fed pellets since it was weaned. Shame...the vet agrees they are mostly the cause. It depends, what brand are you feeding??

There was a movement two years ago in the glider community called "The Jorn Act" that was initiated based ONLY on the large number of gliders dying from aflatoxin poisoning from feeding pellets - all types of pellets.  It is not "opinion" it is fact and can easily be checked with a simple search of aflatoxin or the Jorn act on other, more active glider boards.

Not a risk I will take - ever.  ESP. when I can feed a diet that is comparable in price to those pellets, very easy to feed, and much safer.

Val,
Thanks for confirming that, I was nearly sure I read something about a Glider passing away do to a poisoning from pellets!!! Check out www.glidercentral.net, I'm sure there is LOADS of great information on that board. Val, aren't many of the proven diets LESS COSTLY than pellets too??? They are easy to feed and you don't have to worry about the risk.

I don't remember if you told me or not, but what diet do you feed Val?

OMG goodness do not feed them that crap! They are not getting their nutrition from it. Feed them one of the diets that are approved. We feed ours HPW as well as safe fruits and veggies plus mealworms. We also give some snacks once in awhile, like papaya yogurt drops, etc
