While there are many controversies regarding the diets of captive Sugar Gliders it is universally accepted that a poor diet will in all cases adversely affect your animal. Sugar Gliders have a unique digestive system and special dietary requirements. Sugar Gliders are also subject to other life-threatening diet related ailments such as Hind Leg Paralysis (HLP) and digestive tract blockage.
Food and water
As for bowls...PLEASE EVERYONE...remember these are allowing your gliders to
defecate and urinate in the bowl and then drink from it. Not sure about the
rest of you but I get mad when I see dogs drink from toilets.
You want a "PROVEN" diet, and remember to give them veggies too. They may love grapes, but they need to eat their veggies. Find something they like, corn is great, but not too
much because it is high in phosphorus. John likes to find a veggie or two and
blender it along with some others they don't like so much. This can be frozen
too. That way they're getting the stuff they doesn't want along with the
stuff they do. One study by the state of Mich. University showed that cat
food can cause intestinal blockages in gliders leading to death. I discussed
this with my vet and was informed that not only are intestinal blockages a
real possibility and concern but that it can also cause renal (kidney) damage
and disease as well. I suggest for the health of your glider that you avoid
giving them cat food of any kind. I mean why take chances?? Just a quick note
to remind you that peanuts are very fattening. Remember to give them only as
rare treats. Some gliders do love them and will eat many and get real pudgy.
